Truth about NIT CALICUT

Placement in various organization and highest package of the campus

From s7 you are eligible for campus placement. Most companies would give 6.5 or 7 c as the cutoff. Goldman Sachs, sprinkler, linked in, oracle, de shaw, Atlassian, intuit, Nvidia, sales force, arceium, Wells Fargo, Texas Instruments, visa,(Microsoft, Google, and Amazon came for previous years but now blacklisted) and many other comparisons came to college like Cisco, deuthsche bank , Accenture, fractal Analytics, and other startup's with low stipend . Highest ctc will be in between 45-60 lpa generally. One time it was 80lpa. Lowest will be of 3pla -5lpa. Last year it was almost 100 percent placements for cse but now due to recession, HUGE DROP in placement percentage . You can do masters after completing btec in nit Calicut with high chance of getting top universities bcz of nit Calicut fame.

What are the internship opportunities in the campus?

My college provides internship drives with software companies where we do internship there if only we get shortlist and selected for the company. One person once selected for as company cannot continue in the drive. Every company I mentioned in the placements come to the internship. I mentioned only common companies which come for both placement and internship. Internship drive starts from s5. Projects we do under internship role is e varies highly by company dependency. Most stipend ranges from 20000 to 200000

Academic structure and curriculum in the campus

The curriculum is a bit slow compared to other colleges but gives an ample of time to master the topics which they taught . The private Colleges hurries and completes vast syllabus in less time with no perfection or retention. But in nit Calicut you get clarity of what you are doing if you put continuous effort and follow academic curriculum. It is very liberal . They won't take attentendance very seriously. Catch is , if you are not up to date in technology by yourself , you will be in lag because college curriculum won't be teaching advanced tech. Each semester, you can find common ideology /logic for each subjects (ex: top down approach in s6). For further studies , this curriculum builds a strong foundation and principles for continuous learning. But changes they need to adapt is that advanced and new productive stuff should be increased. Practical implementation principles ect should be improved. Exams usually contains 4-6 weeks gap (between end and mid sem )

Course free structure and scholarship

There's no much increase in Tution fee . It's around 67000 per semester of 8 sems total. No other extra mandatory educational related fees. NSP scholarship 30000 for oc ,60000 for obc, 90000 for sc st. Other scholar ships also will be intimated by faculty advisors allocated to the students after joint the colllege. I don't know any campus employment offers as far as I remember. SSL admin ect are some of responsibilities we can do .

Infrastructure of a campus and various events

Ragam cultural Fest in march , tatva technical Fest in October. You can find Colleen Hoover Chetan Bhagat novels and also reference books on depth subjects. Any student with id card can borrow or buy the books or just read it in the library. Benches are bad from second year onwards. First year students have a good class room s with big stage and projector . Labs have AC . Campus WiFi is not very broad and not reachable at all places. Mobile data is very low signaled bcz hilly region. Sports are very good in Nitc like basket ball handball kabati khokho cricket swimming shuttle ect. I'm part of dance team which they using o provide funds very well but the team was good and participation too. There are many student run social groups like hacking clubs coding clubs mathematics club , dance and dramatic gymnastics ect...

What are the facilities provided in the college hostel?

Mirror present, and common bathrooms are there. PWD bathroom per floor is present. A cupboard, table, hanger, and windows are also present. Chairs and beds are also given. Many options for mess. I tried a few messes and they are good for that cost. They proved extra others like sweets increase fruits juices eggs meat ect. Almost every day you can get chicken here both afternoon and night. Hostels are affordable since only 1900 per month . Mess fees is only 4100 per month. Registration policy is of very less overhead. It is simple. Near by, there is karnal junction where you can find all the sup yet markets clothing shops for restrained ect. But even hear the hostel , campus itself provides many small shops for food, common things like re brush soap ect . And Xerox too.

Admission process and eligibility criteria of the college

The admission process was smooth, the Application process is directly from Jee Mains, and the cutoff was availed in website as per the percentiles each category got.as far as I remember , 1300 was the obc cutoff rank. All the things about application form , application fees , dates are communicated through josaa and if given , mail . Four jee mains were conducted and each time , 6 sets were conducted in which few were very high scoring and few were low scoring . Admission process was not very user friendly as village background people also should understand it very well without misunderstandings.

NIT Calicut: 21 Answered Questions

What should be the preference order for the following: NIT Surathkal EEE, NIT Warangal EEE, NIT Trichy EEE, MANIT Bhopal (hometown) EE, MNNIT Allahabad EE, NIT Calicut EE, and MNIT Jaipur EE?

Aarti AhujaLives in Allahabad

For EE/EEE, out of NIT Surathkal, NITW, NIT Trichy, MANIT Bhopal, MNNIT Allahabad, NIT Calicut, and MNIT Jaipur, I would suggest three institutes in the following order of preference-

  1. NIT Surathkal
  2. NIT Trichy
  3. NIT Warangal

My best friend is studying EEE at NITK and he is quite happy with the department. The teachers in the department are a bit strict. But if you bring up a good project idea and stay attentive in their class, you’ll be in a good position. Also, scoring good grades can be a bit tough, but with hardwork and good preparation, you will surely ace your exams.

In terms of EEE placements, NITK, NIT Trichy, and NITW are all equally good options.

As a NITK student, you will get certain benefits. These are-

  1. NITK is the only institute in India to have a private beach.
  2. Among the three institutes that I have listed, NITK is the most suitable for people from other parts of India. Even though there is a 50% state quota, you will find plenty of North Indians and people from other parts of India. You will rarely face a language barrier because most people on campus understand English.
  3. You can showcase your technical skills at the IEEE technical club of NITK.
  4. Technites of ‘Engineer’, the techfest of NITK, does some brilliant work with electronics.

Thus, out of NIT Calicut, NITK, NITW, and all the other options listed by you, I would suggest you to choose NITK Surathkal for your EEE.

Is NIT Calicut good for girls (I have heard there are a lot of restrictions for girls). I plan to join EP and I live in Kolkata. Will it be a good choice?

Kalyan ShastriLives in Warangal

NIT Calicut is safe for girls but most of its rules are very regressive and gender biased. In the girls' hostel, first-year students have to seek multiple permissions for something as simple as going out to get paracetamol. The NIT Calicut girls hostel curfew starts at 7 PM for first year girls and is relaxed to 9 p.m. for seniors. The exit timings are 6 AM onwards. Everyone has to attend the daily roll calls.

To travel home, you must submit your permission form two days in advance and exit/enter the hostel between 7 PM to 6 AM. This causes a lot of inconvenience, especially if your train is scheduled at odd hours.

Hostel amenities are quite average, and just enough for survival.Traveling from Kolkata to Kozhikode is not easy, even by flight. You will get to visit home only during the summer breaks. Also, take up EP only if you are really passionate about Physics and are planning to go for higher studies. If you plan to work in the industry, the placements for EP are quite low. If you can manage with its policies and far-off location, NIT Calicut has a great learning environment and quality of education. Its campus is also really good. NIT Calicut enhances your personality and aids your growth.

Consider all these factors before making a final decision.

How is Civil Engineering at NIT Calicut? Is it worth studying? What is its package?

Kalyan SahuLives in Bhubaneshwar

As a Civil Engineering student, I will dissuade you from pursuing this branch. You might be considering Civil for the tag of IITs, NITs or BITS. The campus placement scenario is not good for Civil and you will be left to either pursue an MS abroad or prepare for GATE/ESE. Both these options have nothing to do with the college tag. You can get an IT job through campus placements, but core jobs are highly difficult to grab. Also, the salary you will be offered in core jobs will not be at par with your NITian tag. Practically speaking, to crack GATE and ESE is more difficult than to crack JEE Mains because of one’s age group at this point. Other government exams are highly irregular and can not be depended upon.

For an average student, it is better to go for CSE or Electronics at an average NIT/ other college. The scenario is not pleasant for Core branches, especially Civil, in India. However, if you are passionate about pursuing Civil, its official placement figures for 2022 are provided by NIT Calicut.

These are the official figures for Civil Engineering 2022 placements at NIT Calicut -

Course

Students placed

Highest CTC

Average CTC

B. Tech Civil

86 out of 98

11.4 LPA

7.36 LPA

I suggest you consult with the seniors and alumni of the Civil branch of NIT Calicut to get a clearer understanding of the ground reality. Go ahead with this branch if you are passionate about it, otherwise choose among the Circuit branches.

How is CSE at NIT Calicut like?

Devesh SarafStudied at NIT Calicut

CSE is the best branch at NIT Calicut for your B.Tech. It has the best placement record and highest packages among all the branches. The course structure is such that you will have plenty of free time at your disposal. There is less workload and fewer classes in CSE. The faculty is filled with experienced and supportive teachers.

You should visit the department’s website. Also check out the course curriculum and syllabi online to get a fair idea of the academics and what courses/books you will be studying.

If you want to pursue B.Tech CSE, you can definitely consider doing it from NIT Calicut.

What are the best things for NIT Calicut students to do on weekends?

Sabeer Chalana
Arnav SharmaStudied at NIT Calicut

Here are some things you can do at NIT Calicut to make the most of your free time-

To keep yourself busy, you can join karate classes. This will keep you active. If you are into video games, you will always find others to join you. You can watch late night movies and tv series with friends. You will surely end up cooking some maggie in your kettle when late night hunger strikes. You can go cycling during the weekends, in the morning. But make sure to take proper care and use proper bicycles because the roads in Kattangal are very steep. Apart from all this, if you wish to explore a bit, you can visit IIM Kozhikode or Munnar/ Kochi.

All that I listed up till now are fun activities. But for a more productive weekend, you can read novels or take part in quizzes and prepare for those. You can also be a member of a club at NIT Calicut. By organizing club events, you can connect with various people and learn management skills.

If you are a CSE student, your workload will be quite less at NIT Calicut. Thus, you will get plenty of free time. You can use this leisure time by participating in extracurriculars, learning a new skill and making memories with your friends.

How was your experience in NIT Calicut if you are a North Indian?

Namrata Das
Arnav SharmaStudied at NIT Calicut

Here is my experience of staying at NIT Calicut as a North Indian-

  1. Climate- Kozhikode experiences extreme showers during monsoon season. If you belong to a place where it rarely rains, you will find it even more difficult to adjust to the climate. During summers, scorching heat is accompanied by humidity. Standing under direct sunlight will drench you in sweat.
  2. Food- The mess food is not good but the vicinity has some restaurants that serve decent food. However, their North Indian meals are not good. The city does have some Punjabi restaurants which will not disappoint you.Non-vegetarians have plenty of mouth-watering delicacies to choose from, but vegetarians have limited food options. I highly recommend shakes from the mini canteen.
  3. Language- The localities, especially auto drivers, speak only Malayali. Therefore, you will face some inconvenience. Inside the campus, however, people speak and understand English clearly. They can also understand (but not speak) Hindi.

You will feel culture shock when you first arrive at NIT Calicut. But as time goes by, you will start loving this place and your college.

Is it possible to change branches after the first year at NIT Calicut?

Shweta RoyLives in Calcutta

NIT Calicut has some of the most illogical rules regarding branch change, some of these include:

  • To be eligible for branch change at NIT Calicut, one needs to score CGPA of 8+
  • Only 2 2 people are eligible to transfer to another branch from a specific branch.
  • Only two incoming transfers are allowed per branch.

As a result of this ridiculous policy, a more deserving candidate fails to change his branch. For example, someone with CGPA 9 could not change his branch because he was the 3rd topper of his branch while someone with a CGPA 8.8 can change his branch if he is the topper of his branch.

So, branch change at NIT Calicut depends a lot on your CGPA and obviously your luck!

What are some pros and cons of NIT Calicut that one should know before joining (ECE)?

Raktim Tarafdar
Shailja KhandelwaB.Tech. from National Institute of Technology, Calicut (2019)

Every coin has two sides and likewise, every college you join will have its unique strengths and weaknesses. Knowing these beforehand helps you manage things and prepares you better. So here are a few pros and cons one must be aware of before joining ECE at NIT Calicut

Pros

  1. The ECE department of NIT Calicut is one of the oldest and most well-established departments of the institute and is also accredited by NBA. It's second only to the CSE department and the competition here is intense.
  2. The standards of examination papers setting and vivas conducted are excellent and evaluate the students' performances pretty well.
  3. The department is well-known for its high-tech embedded systems lab. The lab mechanic as well as the facilities offered help the students conduct cutting-edge research under the guidance of the lab assistants and mechanics.
  4. The faculty of the department is highly experienced and learned with thorough knowledge of their respective fields. They have a knack for delivering concepts in a well-organized manner.

Cons

  1. Being one of the oldest departments, its buildings and overall infrastructure is deteriorating. The entire department is spread across various buildings and it takes time to visit faculties.
  2. The academic level of this branch is high so you cannot survive solely by mugging up the concepts. You need to have in-depth knowledge of the concepts. You might find some courses to be extraordinarily challenging so be prepared for the workload.
  3. A few Ad-hoc faculties destroy the momentum of the course through their poor pedagogy.
  4. The lab sessions are again very challenging and getting the right results may be more challenging than expected.

Overall, the NIT Calicut ECE department will bring in a number of challenges but if you are interested in the branch you will get to experience an unmatched learning environment and opportunities.

How is the food at NIT calicut? Can people from other states adjust?

Sabeer Chalana
Shailja KhandelwaB.Tech. from National Institute of Technology, Calicut (2019)

It is difficult to adjust to the hostel food at NIT Calicut, especially for students outside Kerala. Even though you have the option to change from one mess to another monthly based on your preference, which is interesting for the first few months, gradually you will end up bored with the food and start feeling like all the ten options for food are almost the same.
